SW and Early Childhood campuses host first PTO meeting

The Southwest and Early Childhood campuses conducted their first joint Parent Teacher Organization meeting Nov. 6 and despite the delays from Hurricane Harvey, the parent liaisons selected their volunteers and PTO board for the 2017-18 school year.

The parent liaisons are Ms. LaShanon Hollis of Southwest and Ms. Pamella Thomas of Early Childhood.

"We cannot do what we do without the help of our amazing volunteers and PTO board," Ms. Thomas said.

The group planned for fundraisers, holiday events and early literacy development ideas for the campuses.

"We would like to take this time to thank our 2017-18 PTO board for dedicating their time and talents, and for caring, believing in and inspiring our students and the Varnett families," Ms. Thomas said. "We are truly building our children's tomorrow."

Hundreds of research studies show that when parents get involved, children do better in school, according to PTO Today.

The meeting was held in the Parent Room at the Southwest Campus, where parents can find literature and help about parent involvement, student attendance and other issues that affect families.

"Our PTO board is well known throughout our campuses to the majority of our staff," Ms. Hollis said.

"This special group works alongside our teachers in collaboration to produce meaningful parent involvement," Ms. Hollis said.  "I enjoy hearing their input and seeing the effects of their hard work. I am extremely excited about all this school year holds for the Varnett schools, parents and staff."
