Students celebrate Grandparents Day with breakfast and song

It takes a village to raise a child, and this morning we celebrated Grandparents Day at the Pre-K Southwest Campus. We had a great turnout with more than 60 grandparents who came out to support our children and enjoy a delicious and hot breakfast.

In each of the classes, the students did an arts and craft display for the grandparents and we had a special performance from Mrs. Dill’s class in which students sang a song entitled "A Song for Grandma and Grandpa." The grandparents enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren, and it was a breakfast they won’t forget.

This year, National Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 9. The impetus to designate a special day for grandparents originated with Marian McQuade, a West Virgina housewife. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly people in nursing homes. According to grandparents-day.com, Ms. McQuade also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Ms. McQuade was born in 1917 and died in 2008.

We would like to thank all the grandparents who joined us for this special event.
