Message from the Director

Welcome back to a year that promises to be full of fun, friendship, growth and learning! We are excited to begin our year with new adventures.  I am the director of our Early Childhood program at The Varnett Public School and I am looking forward to serving our Varnett community.

The Varnett Public School is an amazing place to work, learn and grow.  Our incredibly dedicated staff works hard to provide a high-quality program that is rooted in rigorous standards based on curriculum and enriched with fine arts.  Our goal is to ensure academic and personal success for each student.  Together, we encourage each child to aspire to his or her highest potential in a safe and engaging environment.  We strive to provide opportunities so that our students may face and triumph over the challenges of the 21st century.

As “newcomers” to our Early Childhood classrooms, you undoubtedly have questions as to how your child’s class operates.  I would like to take this opportunity to explain some aspects of our program. We are honored that you have become a part of the Early Childhood family. We share a small amount of your child’s life and are privileged to be given the opportunity. Our goal is to impact our students’ lives educationally, emotionally and socially so they are provided with a strong foundation for their educational career. We look forward to working as a family to help each child reach goals that are set for them throughout their time at The Varnett Early Childhood Center. We strive not only to provide a challenging academic program but a secure, personal environment of care to each student. We hope that we can exceed all of our families’ expectations. We want to take this time to personally welcome your family.

We are extremely proud of our Early Childhood program.  As we eagerly accommodate this specific age group of students of four- and five-year-olds who are enrolled in our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes, it is imperative that we do not misconstrue our program with requirements of various “daycare” facilities.  In order for our students to participate in this program, it is imperative that students and parents adhere to all state mandates, school policies and procedures (attendance, tardiness, homework, assignments, uniform requirements, discipline school disruptions, safety).  Ensuring the success of each child is a collaborative effort on behalf of the parent and the entire school community.

Each room offers a range of activities that include learning through play, song, dance, art and technology.  Each room has some duplication of the most popular materials and equipment but also some things that are unique to that room.

At the beginning of the school year, our main goals are to:

  1. Establish a sense of security in the children through the setting of routines.
  2. Foster an easy separation from parents.
  3. Encourage the adjustment to new classmates and teachers.

Our playground gives us added flexibility, allowing classes to overlap outdoor time.  The teachers may capitalize on good weather days by choosing to do outside learning or an art project outdoors, by having a snack and story time outdoors or both.

Each year is somewhat different, depending on the needs of the children and their personalities, the dynamics of each class, the special events throughout the year and even the weather.

At the beginning of each, a newsletter will be given out with pertinent information from within the center for upcoming months. You will receive a newsletter and breakfast and lunch menu. As in the past, our Early Childhood Center offers ways for families and parents to participate in the program. We are highly sensitive to parents’ busy schedules but also recognize the importance of involvement. Throughout the year, there will be a variety of events. Some involve fundraising, networking with other parents, parenting tips, classroom participation and special events as well as parents/teacher conferencing.  In addition to these opportunities, families are asked to participate in both our winter and spring survey. These surveys will be useful in making improvements school-wide.

The Varnett Public School would not be the school it is without the dedication of the parents and community.  We value each and every parent and look forward to working with you.

Thank you for choosing The Varnett Early Childhood Center. We are committed to fulfilling our mission of high-quality care for young children in a safe and nurturing environment while contributing to the development and well-being of individuals and families. We are looking forward to sharing a wonderful year with all of you.  We embark on a new school year with joy and enthusiasm, and we thank each of you for your support of our program.  If you have any questions or concerns that have not been addressed here, please feel free to contact the Early Childhood campus or call 713-726-7690.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cheyne Brown
