Environmentally-themed 2013 calendars showcase Varnett students

A 2013 calendar featuring the images of Varnett students got a plug on Deborah Duncan’s “Meet Great Day Houston” television show on Jan. 17.

Varnett charter school staffers were part of the KHOU, Channel 11 studio audience and all in attendance received the calendar produced by Tammie Lang Campbell, founder and executive director of Honey Brown Hope Foundation. Ms. Campbell said in a news release that 10,000 calendars were printed and distributed through The Varnett Public School, city of  Houston Solid Waste and Management Department,  Comerica Bank and the North Houston Frontiers Club, which sponsors the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast.

The calendar’s diversity/environmental  theme, “We Love America Healthy, Clean and Green,” serves as a 365-day reminder to recycle and reduce landfill waste, Ms. Campbell said. The timing of the launch in mid-January was to honor Dr. King's "environmental dream."

The calendar features:
*Diversity and environmentally friendly tips from Ms. Campbell.
*An educational glossary of diverse holidays.
*Photos of environmentally-conscious Varnett  students for each month of the year.
*Recycling information from the city of Houston Solid Waste and Management Department.
*An environmental message from Houston Mayor Annise Parker.

"As global citizens of the planet, we can breathe easier and live healthier if we work individually and collectively to preserve and protect our environment,” Ms. Campbell said.

The calendars are being distributed to parents at each of Varnett’s three campuses.
