Students celebrate Black History Month with Ensemble Theatre-Houston

Southwest pre-kindergarten students shared their celebration of Black History Month with Ensemble Theatre performers, and then did some entertaining of their own.

They watched, giggled and laughed during the performance of Anansi and the Talking Watermelon, the story of a clever spider who uses his tongue to trick his friends. The ensemble members clearly enjoyed themselves and fielded questions after the show.

Later that day, on Thursday, February 25, they participated in the singing of Negro Spirituals, and continued with performances  such as “Sing About Martin,”  “Smooth Criminal” (Michael Jackson), “Glory” (John Legend and Common), “Still I Rise” (Maya Angelou), “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “Amazing Grace,” “We’ve Got the Whole World in our Hands"  and “Hey Black Child.”

Parents beamed with pride as they watched their children take part in the ceremonies.  Overall, the two events were fun, entertaining and educational.

The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community.
