Costumed children collect treats in a nod to literacy

Rain forced a scheduled Trunk or Treat event indoors, where students collected goodies and listened to childhood songs and dance videos in a ritual viewed as an alternative to Halloween.

Twenty-five parents joined the fun Oct. 31 at the Early Childhood Center cafeteria as students were encouraged, still, to chant (see video)  "Trunk or Treat" led by Ms. Pamella Thomas, the parent liaison.

Costumed students, and even some parents, stood in line for Rice Krispie treats, fruit snacks, natural juices, cookies, Pringles and popcorn balls. Staff also handed out a few pencils and "a couple of books for prizes," Ms. Thomas said.

The event was billed as Book Character Day, when students and staff dress up as their favorite characters from books they love in an effort to promote literacy. It also tests the imagination of students as they come to school with colorful and creative attire.

About 70 students took part in the activities.

Thanks to the parents who joined their children for the festive affair.
